Privacy & Cookies

This site collects certain data to enable functions such as comment form, signup forms and statistics. Read more info below.

What data this site collects and why

On this site I use the default WordPress comment form to enable discussion and connect with people who visit the site. The form collects name, e-mail address, site url (if you leave one), content you write, Gravatar photo (if you uploaded one to gravatar.com) and ip address. Only your name, url, comment and picture (if you’ve chosen to use Gravatar) will be visible on the site. Your name, e-mail, comment and ip address will be saved in the database which is stored on a server in Dublin, Ireland, through a reliable web hosting company.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it.

After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible on the site next to your comment.

The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/.

If you wish to receive e-mails when there is a reply to a comment you have left on the site, the e-mail address you have provided in the comment form will be used for this. To opt in, you can click the check box “subscribe to comments” near the comment form

Visitor comments will be checked through an automated spam detection service to protect the site against spam.

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

If you leave a comment on our site you can opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you do not consent to having your information processed by WordPress that hosts this website, please don’t use the comment form. If you would change your mind and wish to be deleted from the database, let me know by sending an e-mail.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files that can be used by websites to make a user’s experience more efficient.
The law states that we can store cookies on your device if they are strictly necessary for the operation of this site. For all other types of cookies we need your permission.

I use cookies on this website to enable useful functions, such as the commenting form, sign-up form and other conveniences. The website platform uses cookies to determine that you have visited the website before, so that the site loads faster the next time you visit. These are essential cookies to make the site work. Feel free to disable them in your browser if you wish to do so.

You can opt in to a cookie that remembers your name, e-mail address and site url in the comment form for the next time you want to leave a comment.

I don’t use any third-party cookies on this site.

Statistics

This site uses a service called Web-stat for statistics about visitors, and will collect anonymised information about you.

Web-stat is an online service which helps me to understand the visitors; for example, how visitors find the website (did they click a link on social media, search on Google, etc), how long time they spend on the site, if they click on links to other pages, and so on. This helps me to offer a better online experience to the visitors.

Web-stat does not use cookies but it collects certain anonymised information about visitors.. This data includes:

  • your location
  • what device, OS and web browser you use to visit the website
  • where you came from to visit the website (if you clicked a link on another website, social media for example)
  • what links on this website you click on
  • how long you stay on this website
  • if you are a new or returning visitor

Subscription form

If you choose to register for e-mail subscription, your e-mail will be registered. Your e-mail address will only be used to send automated e-mails when there are new blog posts, and possibly occasional information e-mails about news regarding the site.
I use Mailerlite as subscription service. You can read their privacy policy here.

To make the Mailerlite service available, there are cookies from them that I can’t control. To disable cookies in your browser, see the “handle cookies” tab.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

If you have any questions, please contact me.
