I’m finally back to the blog! This autumn I’ve had the hands more than full with my Italian studies, and I was unable to also take time to write. But I’ve been around a bit and I’ve tasted some very interesting whiskeys. One of them was the Drumshanbo single pot still, that was released just after Whiskey Live, and I had the opportunity to taste it this week. After the exhaustion of the last few weeks, my brain isn’t totally into writing yet, but I thought I’d write a short review also to let you know that I’m alive.
The Drumshanbo single pot still whiskey is distilled by The Shed Distillery in county Leitrim, in December 2014. They are previously known for their Gunpowder gin, and this is their first whiskey release. As a big fan of single pot still whiskey, I’m of course delighted to see yet another distillery make pot still whiskey. I like to see traditions being kept alive (if they are good, of course), as well as innovations in the whiskey industry.
This whiskey is made with barley, unmalted barley and also a bit of Irish Barra oats, and has been matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and oloroso sherry casks, then bottled at 46%. I’m not sure if I’ve tasted a whiskey made from oats before, at least not as far as I know. It was interesting.
I found the aroma a bit crazy, to begin with quite acid, medicinal. Then there’s the arrival of rich warm notes, honey, and vanilla with spice.
Warm nutty flavours, oat, hazelnut. Cardamom or other Christmas spice (or was it the festive decor in the bar? Who knows!). Warm and rich, nice body with a long spicy finish. Very enjoyable.
